The facts about medieval life are most likely going to surprise many as they do not understand what life in that age was like. To most people, the medieval period is linked to knights in shining armor. To other people, the medieval age is all about the Tudor kings and pageants. The timing of the medieval period is something that historians disagree about. It comes to an end at around 1485, the period when renaissance starts, having begun in 476 and it is also referred to as the Middle Ages. Most people were either peasants or knights. Most people share the assumption that you were either a serf or a knight although it was a fact until around 1100. Most towns and cities across Europe grew during the twelfth century. In most cases, they had a job distribution we can recognize. Most peasants however owned their own and which means that they could not be serfs. Those who were tied to the land they own still experienced equal opportunities as fee men.

Elections were already a thing by then. Even though voting is viewed as a modern day phenomenon, people in the middle ages loved voting too. There were positions for mayors and bishops that were up for takes. Sometimes, the king’s position was open to democracy through voting too. The succession of the king’s throne by their son is one that predominantly happened in England between 1087 and 1189. It was normal for disputes to arise in other kingdoms and elections would be used to settle the disputes about leadership. Leadership disputes were also a common thing, and elections could sometimes be used to resolve the disputes. The voting was however different as only the nobles had the right to vote with the ordinary people being allowed to vote on a local level.

Traveling was a thing in the Middle Ages. Although it is true, not always did people grow up and die in the same place they were born. Going on a pilgrimage was a common thing since many people actually traveled. Fo4r some, travel was a part of their job as they were traders importing spices, silk and other luxury goods from Asia and the middle east. There is a volume, Journey to the Eastern Parts of the World, which dates back to 1253.

Plague claimed many lives, but people did not help either. In the Middle Ages, plague or the Black Death was a big killer. It wiped out close to sixty percent of the European population. The cause of the disease was however unknown to people.
